1. The Fax -  it was invented in 1843 and patented in 1876, by a Scot (of course it was Very Happy ) Alexander Bain.  He introduced the first commercial transmission between Paris and Lyon in 1865.

2.  Contact lenses -  Adolf Flick introduced these in 1888 and were made of blown glass and could only be worn for a few hours - presumably before the pain outweighed the advantages of being able to see.

3.  Seismographs -  date from 1880 in the modern era, but Zhang Heng invented one in China in the year 132.

A picture of it can be found through this link:

4.  Submarines - Most of us know that they were around in the Victorian era, but did you know that they were invented in 1580 by William Bourne in England?

5.  Vending Machines - Dated from 1880 and sold postcards and books in London. There was also an ancient version which dispensed holy water in temples. The inventor is credited as Hero of Alexander

An interesting item from NPR (national public radio) yesterday:  metal detector  Alexander Graham Bell invented the first metal detector in 1881 in an effort to help the doctors locate the bullet inside President Garfield.  It was unsuccessful and Garfield died with the bullet still inside.  Once he was autopsied, Bell speculated that either it didn't work because the bullet was too deep inside him for the detector to find it or the metal springs in the mattress they had laid Garfield on messed up the readings.  (Nevertheless, the metal detector did work in general, just not that time)

And sad to say, there are those in the modern medical community who theorize that if Garfield had been left alone to heal on his own, rather than being continually poked and prodded for two-plus months after being shot, he might have had a good chance of living to a ripe old age.
