PostSubject: Nancy and S3's mad days out   Fri May 15, 2015 10:04 am

As some of you will have gathered from chat, I recently spent some days with Nancy Whiskey. We had a truly fabulous time!

Since some of you asked for pictures - well, here they come.

We managed to do and see a lot in a few days.

There was a lot of nature

and culture, of course.

We saw local not-quite-wild-life,

strange creatures with weird hairdos

and scary teeth.

We spotted some pretty birds

oops, birds

and much, much more. Very Happy

I learned interesting things about churches. Sometimes the main entrance can be curiously narrow

while the "back door" shows quite different dimensions...

Is that supposed to tell us something about the people using these doors? Or could it be that people got "turned around" a little over the years?

I also learned that even when working on a monument for a church, there's such a thing as "Friday-afternoon" or "Monday-morning" work.

I love how they left both numbers fully gilded, obviously proud of their work. And why not? Both numbers are beautifully exercised.
Who cares about precise dates anyway?

We also did some time travelling and met Queen Elizabeth I at Kenilworth Castle.

She (and we) enjoyed a horse riding demonstration.

No, really. They did ride.

The horses were impressively nimble-footed,

and the skills of the riders were also impressive. I think even Heyes couln't have sat a horse any better.
But the jousting left something to be desired...

I guess, like the quality of some of the pictures. What can I say - my poor camera got confused what to concentrate on...
Anyway, it wasn't really jousting, but a Doma Vaquera style dressage display - developed from work riding with "wild" bulls in Spain. I'm not sure if this kind of ranch work (with long lance-like sticks) ever transferred to Mexico. If yes, Heyes and Curry would have been impressed by it, I'm sure. And wouldn't it have been fun to see the Alcalde, sorry, El Clavo and his men ride a lance attack against the stampeding herd?

We also watched another display.

Almost like a ball game.

Only with birds:
Throw them in the air...

...and then try to catch them again

or something like that.

(This bird, btw, is an American Harris Hawk - someone among those Tudor falconers must have a Tardis stored away somewhere!)

But the display was really fabulous. One falcon was being worked with a lure, then the Harris hawk demonstrated
a different hunting style and at last a Peregrine falcon showed off his hunting skills, circling in the sky, then attacking from “hiding”, e.g. after having flown behind the tower, then suddenly “shooting” down on the intended target with incredible speed.

We also could witness what a "bird's appetite" is:

Fanfiction writers, I can now definitely and with authority say: Heyes doesn't have a bird's appetite! Stop writing him like that!

The little bird far more resembled the Kid: Quick as lightning during the attack. Always went after food, no way would he be distracted. And once he had his food, you better did not try to interfere with it (or him)!

Talking about eating - traditional medieval food was also to be had. It might be somewhat difficult to swallow and was definitely too hot for my taste, but maybe the Kid...?

There also were some shooting demonstrations. Our boys would have had fun with the firearms of the time!

Not exactly of quick-draw quality, but very impressive; something for most of the senses - eyes, ear, nose.

And they did in fact have a quick-draw artist. It was the archer - managing to shoot all of his 12 arrows (he would have had time for at least 3 more) from his longbow before the gun expert had managed to reload and fire.

A pity Heyes and the Kid do not really fit into Tudor times. Then again, we might have come to blows over who gets the dimpled darling for the day...
So, we found ourselves a different cavalier (the Master of Ceremonies).

Since we were already time-travelling, we hopped to neighbouring Warwick for a tour of the Leycester hospital. No worries, we had not managed to get shot and were in need of treatment.
We only sightsaw. (Is that a word? If not, it should be!)

The Leycester was founded as a hospital and retirement home for servicemen by Robert Dudley during the reign of Elizabeth I and though it's no longer a hospital, it still serves its other purpose. That probably makes it the oldest retirement home in the world.

Looks familiar? If yes, you’ve either been here, or have watched Dr. Who (David Tennant and Martha Jones meet Shakespeare episode). Our “cheeky chappy” guide (somewhere between 70 and 90 years old, I think) proudly told us of his encounter with the Doctor’s Tardis.

Or maybe you're more of a Pride and Prejudice fan (the Colin Firth one; after the elopement in London)?

We definitely had a great time!

And a few more pictures, just because I like them.

A roof detail from the Leycester

and an atmosphere shot across the graveyard of the church from the beginning

And Nancy told me to publish pictures of her furry feline friends.
You know, the ones who occasionally join in the chat or call her away for feeding duty.

Ladies first - the lovely Luna

her father Vladimir

and Luna's brother Langtry

I think he was especially happy to have a new human slave for chin tickling, petting and the occasional belly rub.

But it was Vladimir, who cleverly forced me to stay longer:

Great pictures!  I'm glad you had such a great time.  Is the second picture Nancy's house?  My, but it's grand.  sunny

I love the pictures, thanks for putting them up and thanks for the wonderful comments!  I love the kitties - by coincidence, I have two cats - brother and sister.  The boy is a striped tabby and the girl is black, though she does have a few white hairs at her throat.  Otherwise, they look a lot like Luna and Langtry!

Thank you, Sheila.

What a strange coincidence that your cats look similar to Nancy's furry friends.
Luna also has a few white hairs on her throat, even if they don't really show up in the picture.

Happily mad site, over 800 years of history in a few photos (church included ~ 'formal history', although the site pre dates Christianity) and the most comments are about my mad, happy wee pussy cats.

Mee-oww

My favourite photo is still the hawk landing on it's handlers gauntlet in a wonderful silhouette.  S3 really has an eye for photography, and she is not too bad at beadwork jewellery either.  Very Happy

Looks like you all had a great time! Lovely pictures. And I too have kitties that resemble your babies. Their names are Pixie and Barbosa. Thanks for posting cat
