Love the 1880 town sign, Keays. Lol. Hopefully some of the rabbits are really plot bunnies...
I was in this area in 1992 and did a tour of several filming locations (the fort, Lakota village,...). They had left some tipis standing and they had props in them. Some of the original costumes were on display in a saloon in Deadwood. For miles around everybody seemed to try to make some profit out of the movie.
But then I came across a fenced in field with an Appaloosa in it and a huge sign near the road proclaiming proudly the horses name and that he was the ONLY horse in South Dakota NOT seen in Dances with Wolves.

How close did you get to the longhorns? I hope there was still a fence between you. Those horns sure look impressive!
And the Longhorn Saloon - looks like things got "lively" in there...

Oh, and the animals. Poor Cisco. Love the dromedary, an animal you don't really expect to see there!

Loved the badlands. But it's sad to think that the Lakota had been forced to live in this barren landscape, always hunted, even though most of South Dakota, the Black Hills,... had been promised to be theirs forever...

What an incredible landscape. It doesn't seem real to me; more like a movie set for a science fiction movie.

Again, big open countryside. Leaving the farms and dairy country of Wisconsin and Minnesota to get back into ranch country. Lots of little lakes like this scattered all over the place. Lots of Black Angus. Also noticing and interesting change in the herds of cattle now as compared to last year. There used to be a distinctive preference for straight Black Angus here on the plains but last Fall's early and devastating blizzard wiped out many of the cattle in S. Dakota and Wyoming. Am noticing more mixed herds now of not just Black Angus, but Hereford and Black Baldies. Wondering if the ranchers are attempting to build up a more durable breed that can perhaps withstand and harsh weather out here better than the pure breds. Just an observation.

Ah, the piccies bring back memories of several trips I've made through there.  Can't help but wonder if the sign in the distance of one of them is for Wall Drug ...

Could very well be Remuda.  We were getting hit with Wall Drugs every mile or so from at least 100 miles out. You got sick of seeing them.

On my first trip out there many moons ago, we were warned in advance about the Wall Drug signs but also encouraged to stop and see it (it was described as kitschy but still worth a look).  Not knowing what to expect, we encountered the first sign 500 miles east, in Minnesota, after which they became more frequent.  It was an experience, and of course we had to get our free ice water and nickel coffee with free refills.  To those not in the know, it's similar to the signs leading up to and then visiting South of the Border along I-95 in South Carolina.  However, once in each place is quite enough.

Mount Rushmore - seen it too and I still feel uneasy about it. A great feat of engineering, but did they have to choose an area sacred not only to the Lakota, but several other tribes? It smacks of desecration and intentional humiliation to me.
Powder River and piccies of the Plains bring back memories from both my trips. And I agree with Remuda - Wall Drug is an experience, but once it quite enough.

Yes, once is enough for Wall Drugs.  Some interesting paintings though.

I don't think the government was too concerned about how the Lakota felt back then.  It might even have been an intentional snub.  'See?  We're in control here' or something like that.

I would love to see the Crazy Horse Monument when it's done but that may not happen in my lifetime!  It's still an interesting site to go visit though.

I would like to see the Crazy Horse Monument finished too. It feels right that finally a Lakota chief is honoured this way. It has made some progress since I was there in 1992, but you are probably right that it might take next to forever to finish... They had a nice little museum there, so it was worth a visit anyway.
