Here's a funny article about the lost art of swearing in 'Western'.

http://www.hcn.org/articles/rants-from-the-hill-how-to-cuss-in-western

My daughter set up a cuss jar in our house, charged a quarter a cuss and my brother-in-law would slip her a twenty dollar bill to "cover the weekend" when he came to visit.

What's really funny is that 85% of these words/phrases are still in use in my area lol

Love these, Insideoutlaw! I think some of these might be Irish, they have a particular gift at wrestling the English language into submission. So many immigrants make for the language to be a colourful patchwork. Thanks for posting.

Love it! Now let's see how many of those we can work into some stories. The first bunch, of course, is very familiar. The biggest problem, as the author understands, is to make sure people know what you're trying to say. Got to learn 'em to swear!

Bravo! I have been known to twist a listeners ear with more then a few of this rusted beauties. Over the years I have collected, noted, stored 'em up and roll'em out when the fancy touches me. My favs for any day lingo are catawampus, bodacious, Tarantation, by Hades, Dingus, and the ever colorful hellfire. Do any of all y'all have favorites?

I think Tarnation has to be up there for me. What about the rest of you?

Sorry, not yet fluent in Western Swearing. But I'm working on it. Very Happy After watching enough "Firefly" I picked up a few expressions which I still like and (occasionally) use, like "Gorram" or "Tamade" (chinese). It's a pity ASJ had to be so clean. It would have been nice to learn some colourful Cowboy expressions.

I too think it is a pity that was stuck with the 1970s decorum of speaking. I am not saying, I would like to show it to be like Deadwood. (Amazing show, by the way).  Just would be interesting to see the outlaws side a bit grittier at times, because I dang well know, that given the chance men cuss beautifully and with great flourish every effing time they have a chance.

A few realistic western curses would sure make it a lot more colorful, interesting, and realistic. I can't really imagine outlaws talking like ministers. I love the one moment in the series when the Kid, realizing dynamite is about to go off right by him, says "Sh--" and dives under his jail bunk. That's about the only hint we get.
