I visited Durango just over a year ago, and I can attest to all the attractions in the area, and what a great town it is. There is plenty to see and to do, and lodging is abundant.

My friend and I did a day-long excursion in which we had a guided tour. We drove up to Silverton and, from there, took a four-wheel drive up the Alpine Road, along the top of the Rockies, and visited the ghost town of Animas Forks. We were way above the tree line, and got as high as just under 13,000. We descended back into Silverton and took the train back.

Every Thursday night is art gallery night in Durango, where you can visit one gallery after another. Other stores are open, too.

There are also hot springs in the area. I did not visit that, however.

Hi Folks,

I will be reposting the poll tonight when I get home from work as it was pointed out to me that the period for the visit to DC was much wider than  the original poll suggested.

That, of course, has to be put right before we can continue polling!  It's only temporarily suspended as my system at work won't let me fix it in my lunch hour.

Here's the link for the Durango hot springs:

They have great lodging, too.  I've stayed there.

I'll stop now.....I promise.

Hi Everyone,

My other half and I have decided to delay our trip until next spring. We retire in March and it makes more sense to come when we don't have to hurry back and we can also take in a few other places like the Grand Canyon and San Francisco because he's never been there.

Another factor is that it's getting harder to go to work for this last year, knowing that it'll be over soon, and we need to spread our holiday throughout the year to give us regular long weekends. I think we'll go mad if we have to go months without any time off.

I'm sorry to postpone but I'm really looking forward to making the trip even bigger. I believe that there were a few members who couldn't make it this year but who can make a trip next year, so it may work out to be a larger get-together. I am still very happy to facilitate arrangements for this who still want to meet this year.

Oh dang. That is disappointing Sarah, but understandable. It might be easier for us next Spring as well since Paul will be retired by then. Considering the change of plans, we may just go to the meet up in Durango. Perhaps if you're on the west coast next year you and your husband can come visit us in Washington State. We have a place for you to sleep! Or we can plan a get together in Portland or something like that. Anyway, we'll see.

Yes, Keays. I am disappointed too, but it just makes sense for us to wait a little bit and them make it a bigger trip. This countdown to retirement is hard! I feel like a child counting sleeps to the big day.

I know what you mean. And for us, even once Paul is retired I'm still going to be working for at least another five years. Frustrating. I just want to be able to relax and enjoy ourselves while we still can.

I wish I could be there to meet you all either way. But my career is finally taking off big time after too many years of underemployment. So there's no time for vacations.  I've got nothing to complain about except not seeing you. So enjoy retirement and meet ups!
